About Q103 Kids

Q103 Kids relaunched in 2006 with a commitment to helping local organisations working with children and young people up to the age of 21 years old who experience the negative effects of poverty, abuse, neglect, homelessness, violence or crime, illness and disability.

Our focus is local fundraising with money raised and awarded locally. This really benefits the community that we all work and live in. In the last 10 years, Q103 Kids has awarded more than £300,000 to children’s organisations in Cambridgeshire, helping to make our community a better place for children to live and grow in.

Q103 Kids will be donating money raised from this event to the following local charities.

CLIC Sargent

CLIC SargentEvery day 10 families are told their child has cancer. In Cambridgeshire alone 44 families received support.  CLIC Sargent is the only charity that offers them all round care and support. That’s because we’re there… caring every step of the way:

During treatment
– specialist nurses, doctors, play specialists, Homes from Home
In hospital & at home – specialist social care and family support
In the community – specialist youth services, holidays, grants, helpline
After treatment – helping survivors, supporting those bereaved, research

CLIC Sargent provides the widest range of services and the highest number of care professionals. Our services are tailored to family-needs, using feedback from our service-users.  As advocates we give children, young people and their families a strong national voice, helping them to be heard and understood. Our clinical research looks at ways of improving treatment and managing side-effects, to help patients and to improve quality of life for survivors.

Ely Rookies

Ely RookiesEly Rookies is a member of the Royal Lifesaving Society UK.  We use their syllabus “Rookie Lifeguard” to teach children the dangers of water. We build on this, giving them the skills to get themselves and others out of danger if something goes wrong. We also teach basic first aid skills, while keeping the activities fun. We have taught many children over the years and have had them go on to gain full lifeguard qualifications. The training can also help them gain their Duke of Edinburgh awards. For some children this is the only opportunity they have to learn these vital skills in water safety and first aid.

Huntingdon Young Carers Project

Huntingdon Younc Carers ProjectThe Young Carers Project of Huntingdonshire is part of West Anglia Crossroads Caring for Carers and is a registered charity.

The Project works with over 320 Young Carers aged 5-19 years in Huntingdonshire who care for a family member who may have a long term illness, a disability, a mental health problem or may misuse drugs and alcohol.  It is important to remember that some young carers will not be doing ‘hands on’ care but may be providing emotional support and could be struggling with feelings of anxiety and fear.

The purpose of the Project is to give the Young Carer a break from their caring role and the chance to be with others who are in similar situations, helping to ease the sense of isolation some Young Carers tell us they feel.  Some Young Carers get very little time to themselves due to their caring commitments, so they welcome every opportunity they get to meet up with other Young Carers. Young Carers tell us time and again that they want to have fun and a chance to get away from it all.

The Project provides activity groups and a 1:1 Service which provides both practical and emotional support.  Last year, our Young Carers in Education project started groups within schools and helps schools become more young carers aware.

During school holidays we arrange focus days, outings and trips.  In the past these have ranged from trips to Wicksteed Park, Alton Towers and London to focus days on healthy eating, art/craft and drama.  Each year we like to take the Young Carers on a residential trip but this hasn’t always been possible due to funding.  Past comments from Young Carers about the residentials show how appreciated the project is and include
“I thought the trip would not be that fun, but it turned out to be the best weekend in my life.  I met new friends and got to do things I never dreamed of, it was great” and
“I enjoyed the weekend away because I need it and I have not had a break for a long time”.

The Project is funded by grants and donations and we are constantly looking for new funding to continue running the project as it currently is and provide this valuable service to such a large group of vulnerable young people.

If you would like to find out more about the Project please contact us.

The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

The Arthur Rank Hosipce CharityThe Arthur Rank Hospice Charity cares for adults with life-limiting illnesses.  At the Hospice  we have a support network designed to help families cope as they face the emotional and practical challenges of caring for a loved one.  Inevitably children are also affected when a close family member is diagnosed with a terminal illness and our team of specially trained Bereavement Counsellors help to support children and young people both before and after bereavement.

The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is now totally responsible for funding Bereavement Counselling at the Hospice and we are delighted to have been chosen again as one of the beneficiaries of the Magical Moonlight Walk.   The donation we receive this year will go towards the cost of funding this vital service which helps so many children and their families at a time of crisis.
