The Charities

The Magical Moonlight Walk is run by and benefits two great charities; Teenage Cancer Trust and Have a Heart – the registered charity of Cambridge radio station Heart.

Have a Heart is the new name for the charity of Cambridge's favourite radio station.

The good news is that Have a Heart will continue to provide grants to disadvantaged young people in our communities.

Going forward, Have a Heart will help not just children but a variety of good causes. Our mission is to make a real difference in the heart of our communities.

All money raised in Cambridge, Newmarket, Haverhill, Saffron Walden, Ely and Huntingdon will stay locally and help support local causes.

Over the last ten years over £340,000 has been raised and distributed to community projects ranging from the purchase of minibuses for the disabled to funding play equipment for disadvantaged children.

Heart Breakfast presenters Tom and Emma are huge supporters of Have a Heart and are inspired by the work it does - "It's a real honour to be associated with a truly local charity that helps disadvantaged children living in and around Cambridgeshire." says Tom. Emma adds "We feel this is an important part of our community and is a subject very close to our hearts."

Charity Manager, Hayley Scrivener says, "This year, we are aiming higher, and our goal is to raise even more money to help many local groups working with young people enjoy the new opportunities opened up to them by the charity. We can not do it without your help so thank you."

About Teenage Cancer Trust

We've all been teenagers. You may still be a teenager. You may be parents or grandparents of teenagers. We all know the pleasure and the pains of growing up into adulthood. Too many of us have seen cancer in our families and amongst our friends. We have seen the fear and emotional havoc it wreaks. Each day in the UK, 6 teenagers will find out they have cancer. These young people often get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities alongside children or old people.

Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) focuses on the particular needs of these teenagers and young adults with cancer, leukaemia, Hodgkin's and related diseases by creating specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. It is anticipated that treatment on a Teenage Cancer Trust unit can improve chances of survival by 15%.

TCT has already designed and built eleven units in the UK. Building the units costs upwards of £2 million each. The charity's target is to have at least 22 across the UK to ensure every young person has access to one.

Currently there are no specialist facilities for teenagers with cancer in the East of England. The nearest TCT units are in Birmingham and London however funds awarded to TCT from the Magical moonlight walk will be used on the proposed TCT unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, with the aim of improving the lives of young people with cancer in the region.
